  • An Introduction to Treasury Management 29 September 2010, London This course introduces participants to treasury management. The course initially provides an overview of the external financial environment, the general regulatory environment and the nature of a building society and its treasury function. Following this overview there is an introduction to the revised treasury regulatory framework and its impact upon liquidity, wholesale funding and financial risk management.
  • Treasury Risk Management 30 September 2010, London This course provides an overview of the financial risks that societies face. It then considers in some detail key risks such as Liquidity and Credit within the context of revised treasury regulations and also market developments. The objective is to aid the construction of a framework to measure, manage and report financial risks. In the final sessions there is an examination of the role of the ALCO and its operation in practice. This will include discussion of the type of reports ALCO should be receiving and examples of good and bad practice.
  • The Changing Payment Systems Environment: An Industry Update 5 October 2010, London The Payments Council has recently announced the intention to close the central cheque clearing in 2018. What will be the implications for societies and their members and what are the alternatives? This seminar aims to answer these questions as well as focus on the evolution of the Faster Payments scheme, developments in fraud risks and prevention, the potential card applications, the future passbook and other topical payment related issues.
  • Audit and Accounting Seminar 7 October 2010, Leicester In a highly specialist and regulated sector it is important for firms and auditors to keep up to date. Regulatory, auditing and accounting requirements are constantly changing and this seminar provides a summary of the key implications of such changes for building societies with presentations from specialists with extensive regulatory, financial sector and building society experience.
  • Secretaries Seminar 12 October 2010, London This seminar will provide society secretaries with a valuable update on secretarial and constitutional matters. It will include practical advice and will also provide an opportunity to network with peers in other societies and compare notes on the challenges of being a society secretary.
  • The New Mortgage Landscape: Responsible, ethical, profitable lending 20 October 2010, London With a constrained mortgage market, a new politics and change in regulatory backdrop, just what is the new mortgage landscape? This event will equip mortgage professionals with the tools to structure their mortgage strategy to the ever changing economic landscape, and provide a forum for sharing ideas and knowledge with senior mortgage executives from a wide range of organisations.
  • What CF31 means for your Mortgage Business 26 October 2010, London (FULLY BOOKED. To be repeated on 18 November.) This workshop will work through what the new Approved Person category CF31 (Mortgage Advisers) means for societies, covering the process to attain CF31 approval and the work required to ensure your business is ready to sell in an approved persons regime.
  • Social Media in Building Societies 2 November 2010, London This seminar examines the powerful opportunity that social media, and social networking platforms can provide to building societies. If you are a building society that is still ‘thinking about it’ this seminar explains why social media is so powerful, and where to make a start. Whilst assuming no prior knowledge, it will also benefit societies who have started to incorporate social media within their marketing activity, but want more insight and the opportunity to network with social media specialists.
  • BSA Annual Lunch, sponsored by iRed Partnership 11 November 2010, London The Annual Lunch is a networking event for members and associates of the BSA, who will be joined by guests from government, regulators, industry bodies, the media and other organisations that work closely with mutual lending and savings institutions.
  • Seminar for Chairmen of Audit Committees 16 November 2010, London This seminar, in conjunction with Deloitte, will update chairmen of audit committees on their key duties and responsibilities, and provide practical advice on how they should fulfil their responsibilities. It will also provide an opportunity for delegates to discuss increasing regulatory pressures with their counterparts.
  • What CF31 means for your Mortgage Business 18 November 2010, London This workshop, which is a repeat of the fully booked course scheduled for 26 October, will work through what the new Approved Person category CF31 (Mortgage Advisers) means for societies, covering the process to attain CF31 approval and the work required to ensure your business is ready to sell in an approved persons regime.
  • Seminar for New Directors 30 November 2010, London This seminar provides an intensive introduction to the issues faced by new directors. It allows participants to discuss a range of issues such as competitive pressures, the regulatory and legislative framework, the role of the board, and financial policy issues with industry specialists, and facilitates an exchange of ideas on industry issues.
  • Seminar for Established Directors 7 December 2010, London This seminar provides directors with an update on matters affecting the sector and features presentations on current policy and regulatory issues, professional development and challenges directors might expect to face. Structured group discussions will enable participants to exchange views and ideas on strategic issues.
  • BSA Annual Conference 4-5 May 2011, Birmingham The annual conference is the largest event in the building society calendar. Over 500 delegates from building societies, other mortgage lenders, insurers, government, regulators, the media, and others interested in building societies come together to hear top class speakers and exchange views and ideas on industry issues.

  • Fast Start: An Introduction to Building Societies This popular seminar provides recently recruited staff and graduate trainees with an intensive introduction to building societies. The event brings together a team of experts, which would be difficult to assemble on an in-house basis (especially for a small number of new personnel) to offer a series of papers that will challenge the intellect and provide a memorable introduction to the industry.
  • Advanced Treasury Management: A Practitioners Workshop This workshop extends the knowledge base and skills of those who have either treasury experience or have possibly attended other introductory treasury courses. It will look in some detail at the key risks that face society treasuries, and show how these can be measured and managed realistically.
