Which building societies have recently announced mergers?

There were two mergers on the 31st December 2008. Catholic Building Society merged with Chelsea Building Society and Barnsley Building Society merged with Yorkshire Building Society. The Cheshire and Nationwide building societies merged on 15 December 2008. The Derbyshire and Nationwide building societies merged on the 1 December 2008.

On the 30th March 2009 Scarborough Building Society merged with Skipton Building Society. On the same day Dunfermline Building Society’s retail and wholesale deposits, branches, head office and originated residential mortgages (other than social housing loans and related deposits) were transferred to Nationwide Building Society. On the 1st July 2009 Nationwide acquired the social housing loans (and related depsoits) of Dunfermline Building Society.

On the 1 August 2009  Britannia Building Society merged with Co-operative Financial Services.  Britannia is now a trading name used by The Co-operative Bank p.l.c., part of The Co-operative Financial Services. 

On the 1 December 2009 Yorkshire Building Society and Chelsea Building Society announced their intention to merge. Members of both societies voted in favour of the merger at their respective SGMs in January 2010. Subject to confirmation by the Financial Services Authority, the merger will complete on 1 April 2010.

On the 24 February 2010 Skipton Building Society and Chesham Building Society announced the intention to merge. Subject to FSA approval and a vote by the Chesham members, the merger is expected to take place on 1 June 2010
