Building Societies Association
Chairman’s speech
Speaking at the Building Societies Association’s Annual Conference last week, John Goodfellow, outgoing Chairman of the BSA, reflected on the extraordinary events of the past year and the strengths of the building society sector. He also noted two areas where building societies were, and are, critical of the authorities’ response – the sharp reduction in interest rates and the disproportionate FSCS levies on building societies.
Despite the difficulties of recent months building societies continue to offer their members good value, better standards of service, have a better record of keeping branches open and have lower levels of residential mortgage arrears than their competitors. He also noted that “societies are based all over the country and provide employment in many regions of economic stress. Their economic effect on other service businesses in their regions is immense and one the Government should seek to enhance.” His full speech can be viewed at the link below -
