On 9 April, HM Treasury announced that Sir James Crosby would lead a group of mortgage industry experts, providing advice to the Government on options for improving the function of mortgage finance markets.  Sir James published an update to the Chancellor on 29 July.  The analysis summarised the problems and gave a summary of the options and proposals aimed at facilitating the recovery process in these markets.

The Final report, expected shortly, will present an evaluation of the options for action and their effectiveness, but Sir James noted that he may yet recommend that the Government should not intervene in the market, “on the grounds that such intervention would create more problems than it would solve.”
