(Early Day Motion (EDM) = A motion which is laid to bring attention to an issue, but not debated)
EDM 105 – Bank Charges is sponsored by Mike Hancock MP (Lib Dem, Portsmouth South) laid on the 15 November 2006.
“That this House urges the Government to instigate an inquiry into the miscellaneous but unavoidable charges made by banks, such as survey fees, booking fees, arrangement fees, higher lending charges fees and sealing of deeds fees, which are little more than a backdoor method of increasing their excessive profits, made at the expense of ordinary working people; notes that the NatWest Bank has increased its sealing of deeds fees by 350 per cent. in 18 months; and calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to institute a windfall tax on the profits of the banks in order that they are used for the common good rather than simply profiting shareholders.” The EDM has 36 signatures to date and can be viewed by following the link below.
EDM 494 - Campaign to Protect Rural England against Land Banking is sponsored by Greg Mulholland MP (Lib Dem, Leeds North West)
“That this House shares the concern of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) about the growth of land banking, the practice of subdividing land into small plots then marketing these plots on the basis that permission for development will be granted; agrees with the CPRE that this practice is having serious consequences for the future of England's countryside; further recognises that investors are encouraged to invest in these land banking schemes despite the fact that in many cases no realistic possibility of planning permission being granted exists and thus stand to lose their investments; notes that Land Heritage UK, one of the country's biggest land bankers, has gone into liquidation; and supports the CPRE's campaign calling for the Government to recognise the seriousness of this problem and the need for a co-ordinated and joined up Government response, involving the Financial Services Authority, Office of Fair Trading and Department for Communities and Local Government to protect both our countryside and potential investors from this practice.” The EDM has 19 signatures to date and can be viewed by following the link below.
EDM 500 - Bank Charges No. 2 is sponsored by Jim Sheridan MP (Lab, Paisley and Renfrewshire North), laid on the 13 December 2006.
“That this House expresses its concern at the penalty charging policies of banks and credit card companies; welcomes the news that more and more customers are applying to have these charges repaid; applauds the work of the PenaltyCharges.co.uk team and supports the ongoing investigation of penalty charging practices by the Office of Fair Trading.” The EDM has 49 signatures to date and can be viewed by following the link below.
