Like listed companies, good corporate governance practice for building societies is embodied in a combination of legislative requirements, guidance and codes of practice.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has gained momentum as an issue and is attracting increased interest from politicians, pressure groups, consumers and the media. At the heart of the debate is whether an institution is a good corporate citizen and how this is demonstrated.

Mutuality

All building societies are mutual institutions. Therefore people who have a savings account, or mortgage, are members and have certain rights to vote and receive information, as well as to attend and speak at meetings.
