Mortgage Policy

Building societies hold residential mortgages of almost £235 billion, 19% of the total outstanding in the UK.

Historically, building societies have always helped people to own their home. Building societies continue to offer a range of mortgage products that meet the needs of existing and potential homeowners. The unique way building societies are run often means that their products, and attidude to lending generally, are different compared to other types of lenders.

The impact of these differences typically mean:
  • more prudent and responsible lending - ensuring that the customer is more likely to get a mortgage product that suits their individual needs and is based on affordability;
  • stronger customer focus - working with customers beyond the sale of the mortgage to ensure that customers continue to enjoy the benefits of their mortgage; and
  • low levels of arrears - building societies work closely with their customers to ensure those in (or at risk of being in) arrears are helped by offering generous forbearance - resulting in very few repossessions.
