Building societies are home to a fifth of the nation's cash savings.
2006 was another strong year for building society cash savings, in the face of challenging market conditions. Net savings inflows, at £8.3 billion, were only just down on those for 2005, which with net savings of £9.6 billion was a record year .
Against a background of robust competition from banks and National Savings and Investments, building societies were able to maintain their share of the savings market at just under 20%.
This performance highlights the trust people place in building societies to offer good value products and a safe home for their savings. Societies remained especially strong in the market for cash ISAs, with around 37% of balances outstanding.
