Understanding Mortgage Arrears

The Building Societies Association has published new research into mortgage arrears. The research is based on a survey of mortgage borrowers that have been in arrears in the last two years, the results of which are combined with the results of a survey of building societies.
The research investigates:
- recent causes of arrears
- whether borrowers have repaid their arrears, and how
- what action borrowers took to avoid repossession, including;
- when borrowers first spoke to their lender
- whether borrowers sought independent advice
- the help offered to borrowers in arrears by their lender
- what borrowers thought about the treatment they received from their lender
- the implications of the above findings
