Welcome to the second edition of our e-newsletter, Mortgage Matters.  Published quarterly, it gives you the latest news from the BSA on mortgage matters.

 

Election 2010 - So What Now for the Mortgage Market?

Last week's general election has continued to dominate the news as the parties sought to establish a government.  Now we have a Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition, what are the implications for the mortgage market?

BSA advises new Government to introduce long term support for those at risk of repossession

The BSA and a number of other organisations have written to the new Chancellor George Osborne and the new Business Secretary Vince Cable, urging the Government to make a clear commitment in its first budget to continue to support homeowners in financial difficulty. BSA Conference Discusses Outlook for the Housing Market

A session at this year's BSA Conference looked at the outlook for the housing market.  Featuring presentations from the Nationwide Building Society, the Home Builders Federation and Countrywide, the discussion focussed on new builds, house prices and the outlook for new lending.

BSA leads debate on home buying reform

The BSA has recently hosted a thought leadership discussion looking at issues associated with home buying reform.  The event brought together representatives from all of the key participants in the home buying process - a summary of the event can be viewed here.

 

 

Election Uncertainty Sees Confidence Fragile Amongst Homebuyers

The BSA's Property Tracker survey found over half of homebuyers didn't think it was a good time to buy, the highest level for over a year.  The next survey will find out if the general election has calmed buyers concerns over job security, which remained a major barrier to people buying.

Recent Consultation responses

The BSA has responded to a number of consultations relevant to the mortgage market, covering arrears and possessions issues, approved persons, the private rented sector, powers of sale and orders of sale.

Working With Conveyancers Seminar
13 July 2010, London

This seminar is aimed at building society staff from legal and non-legal backgrounds that come into regular contact with conveyancing practitioners. It will be addressing the topical issues of legal panels; are they fit for purpose, how solicitors work when acting for lenders and the key challenges they face. It will also explore some of the key pitfalls and risks, as well as helping building societies identify appropriate solutions when things go wrong.
