Early Day Motion on building societies and FSCS levy gathers pace in Parliament
 An Early Day Motion (EDM) noting the disproportionate impact on building societies of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) levy resulting from the failure of banks, has attracted over 100 signatures from MPs. The motion, tabled by Ann Cryer, Labour MP for Keighley, has quickly gained cross party support since it was tabled on 13 January.

House Prices in 2009
 The uncertainty experienced in 2008 is likely to continue in 2009 as the general economic outlook deteriorates, with the UK economy in recession. Despite interest rates gravitating towards zero and affordability improving, the deterioration in the UK economy combined with restricted availability of credit will contribute to further house price falls in 2009.

Building societies top the tables for most consistent savings accounts
The latest survey from Moneyfacts shows that building societies dominate the tables for the most consistent savings accounts – offering their members the best value over the long term. In the January 2009 survey, societies accounted for 79% of the most consistent accounts.
Michelle Slade, Analyst at Moneyfacts.co.uk, said: “Once again the percentage of accounts from building societies continues to increase, showing that savers shouldn’t just look to the big banks for the best deals.”

FSA's Banking and Compensation Reform Conference - 2 March 2009, QEII Conference Centre

The conference, which features Adrian Coles, BSA Director-General, as a speaker, will provide an opportunity to hear the FSA’s proposals on how the banking sector will be supervised following the enactment of the Banking Bill.
It will also cover how the FSA proposes to enhance compensation arrangements in the UK. The proposals to facilitate fast payout of compensation will apply to all UK-authorised deposit-takers.
