Community

The Pride in your Community award initiative was established by the Barnsley back in 1999.  It rewards the efforts of groups and individuals who strive to improve their own and others lives and also make their environments better.

This approach mirrors that of Yorkshire Building Society on a national basis. The Yorkshire has adopted a principle of seeking to support the local communities in which its members and staff live and work and this ideal has been further developed through the work undertaken by the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation (Link to www.ybs.co.uk/cf/foundation.jsp which, as a separate charity, is the focal point for all charitable giving. The Yorkshire hopes to gain from the local experience of the Barnsley's customers and to add to its own Working In Society model.

A community's well being often stems from the dedicated hard work of individuals and small groups who, by having a pride in themselves and a clear vision of a better future, then extend their efforts into the community at large. A vibrant caring community can nurture people's inner feelings of well being and care for those around them.

The Barnsley is currently offering its services to many communities from Warwickshire up to the Yorkshire Coast, including Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire. Anyone within these areas can nominate a dedicated and committed group or individual who can demonstrate their value to their community, along with their plans for the future. The only caveat is that awards cannot be considered for political groups or registered charities. Pride in Your Community awards will be between £250 and £500 and made by a panel of interested members who believe in the strength and value of a caring, fruitful future.
