Welcome

Catholic Building Society is an independent mutual Building Society, owned by its Members and run for their long-term benefit.

The Society was formed to help people and this can best be accommodated within a mutual organisation. The Society has provided a safe and secure home for its Members investments for 46 years, whilst offering competitive rates of interest.

When the Society first set down our objectives and guiding principles, these were all focused on helping first-time buyers, many of whom were on low incomes, and to give single women and widows an equal opportunity to buy their own home. In the 1960's this was virtually unheard of. We maintain sufficient reserves to safeguard Members’ funds and reflect our financial strength.

On 7th June 2008 we announced our proposed merger with Chelsea Building Society. A Merger Booklet giving full details has been sent to all eligible voting members which includes a

Question and Answer booklet - 450k PDF

which we hope you will find helpful. If you need further help, please telephone our dedicated Merger Helpline on 0845 607 6702 which will be open 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday (other than bank holidays) or send an email to merger@catholicbs.co.uk.

Our Special General Meeting was held on 9th October 2008 where our members voted overwhelmingly in favour of the proposed merger.
For further details read the press release - Word Doc.

Savings

Our principal objective is to provide competitive savings and investment products which offer excellent value for our Members. Our Accounts include ones which give Members an opportunity to support worthy causes.

Mortgages

We strive to help all prospective Borrowers to buy a home of their own, including those who find it difficult to obtain mortgage facilities elsewhere.

Currently about one-third of our borrowers are women, much higher than the industry average. Our policy today remains unchanged and at the Catholic Building Society we draw great satisfaction from actually achieving what we set out to do, to the benefit of thousands of families across the country.

We believe that mutuality continues to bring benefits because:

  • It gives us an ability to pay and charge competitive interest rates as we have no dividends to distribute to external shareholders.
  • We are able to concentrate on the needs of our Members and not be distracted by short term pressures from the City.
  • We offer a personal service based on a thorough understanding of our Members' needs.
