Risk, regulatory and audit update

6 October 2022

This annual update returns in 2022 as a face-to-face full-day seminar after two years of necessarily being held online.

We have put together a wide-ranging programme including a scene-setting introduction, presentations on current developments and concerns on both prudential and conduct regulation, a topical update on the latest moves on audit reform and governance, and a session on financial crime and cyber risk. In the absence of any significant changes in accounting, we are not including a technical accounting session this time.

After a careful survey of delegates’ opinions, we have decided to run this event face-to-face in 2022, while not ruling out virtual formats in future.

In addition to the formal sessions, there will be the usual opportunity for networking among the other delegates from across the BSA membership – all in the relaxed, spacious surroundings of the Leicester Marriott near J21 of the M1. Come and join us!

Who should attend?
This event is primarily designed for building society delegates (finance, risk and regulatory staff and non-executives) but some content will also be relevant to credit unions.

Programme content:

The economic outlook
The outlook is stormy: the UK faces a cost of living crisis, rising interest rates, slowing growth, and geopolitical uncertainty. This session will analyse the latest economic information and draw out some insights that give context for societies’ own forward planning.
Update on the mortgage and savings market
This session will dive deeper into the two markets where societies operate, reviewing and interpreting the latest trends in the housing market, and in lending generally, and on the savings side also consider the macro picture as the period of loose monetary policy comes to an end.
Audit and governance reform
While we await the Bill that will give effect to the latest Govt. policy on audit and governance reform, this session will cover how far these policy proposals will affect societies, and other relevant updates in the audit / governance space.
Update on current prudential regulation
A PRA speaker will cover the regulator’s current supervisory priorities and relevant policy developments.
Conduct risk - current issues and FCA activity
An expert on the conduct side will unpack the range of regulatory changes and other current initiatives emanating from the FCA that are relevant to societies.
Financial crime and cyber risks
Sadly, these topics never go away. In this session, we will provide an overview and update on current thinking and emerging risk areas.
