Mergers and conversions

Over the years many building societies have merged with others or changed their name. Between 1989 and 2000, ten building societies changed their status completely, converting into or merging with a Plc bank.  None of these converted banks still exists as an independent entity, they are either part of a much larger bank, are a product brand, or their name has disappeared altogether .
