Mortgage lending in the third quarter of 2019 (July to September 2019):
Building societies approved 106,106 mortgage loans, a 26% share of the 407,065 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £15.9 billion, accounting for 23% of the £70.4 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £2.1 billion, a 15% share of total net lending across the market of £14.2 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £333.9 billion at the end of March 2019, a 23% market share.

Household savings in the third quarter of 2019 (July to September 2019):
Savings balances at building societies increased by £1.3 billion, a 12% share of the £11.0 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £291.0 billion, a 19% market share of the total £1,568.1 billion across the market.
