Mortgage lending in the third quarter of 2018 (July to September 2018):
Building societies approved 126,209 mortgage loans, a 31% share of the 402,336 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £17.9 billion, accounting for 25% of the £70.7 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £3.9 billion, a 33% share of total net lending across the market of £11.9 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £316.7 billion at the end of March 2018, a 23% market share.

Household savings in the third quarter of 2018 (July to September 2018):
Savings balances at building societies increased by £3.8 billion, a 39% share of the £9.5 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £279.1 billion, an 19% market share of the total £1,502.6 billion across the market.
