Mortgage lending in the first quarter of 2020 (January to March 2020):
Building societies approved 101,043 mortgage loans, a 27% share of the 367,785 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £13.5 billion, accounting for 21% of the £63.8 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £0.9 billion, an 8% share of total net lending across the market of £10.5 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £336.6 billion at the end of March 2019, a 23% market share.

Household savings in the first quarter of 2020 (January to March 2020):
Savings balances at building societies increased by £3.1 billion, a 14% share of the £21.3 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £297.3 billion, an 18% market share of the total £1,609.2 billion across the market.
