Mortgage lending in the third quarter of 2020 (July to September 2020):
Building societies approved 111,791 mortgage loans, a 28% share of the 397,402 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £14.6 billion, accounting for 24% of the £60.9 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £1.2 billion, a 9% share of total net lending across the market of £12.7 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £338.0 billion at the end of March 2019, a 23% market share.

Household savings in the third quarter of 2020 (July to September 2020):
Savings balances at building societies increased by £1.9 billion, a 5% share of the £36.1 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £297.3 billion, a 18% market share of the total £1,718.1 billion across the market.
