Mortgage lending in the third quarter of 2021 (July to September 2021):
Building societies approved 109,575 mortgage loans, a 28% share of the 393,765 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £16.9 billion, accounting for 24% of the £70.8 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £2.2 billion, a 16% share of total net lending across the market of £14.0 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £348.5 billion at the end of September 2021, a 23% market share.

Household savings in the third quarter of 2021 (July to September 2021):
Savings balances at building societies increased by £4.2 billion, a 29% share of the £14.7 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £325.0 billion, an 18% market share of the total £1,840.3 billion across the market.
