Mortgage lending in the first quarter of 2018 (January to March 2018):
Building societies approved 113,350 mortgage loans, a 33% share of the 347,833 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £15.8 billion, accounting for 26% of the £61.1 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £4.2 billion, a 43% share of total net lending across the market of £10.0 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £302.9 billion at the end of March 2018, a 22% market share.

Household savings in the first quarter of 2018 (January to March 2018):
Savings balances at building societies increased by £3.2 billion, a 40% share of the £8.1 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £271.7 billion, an 18% market share of the total £1,481.5 billion across the market.
