Mortgage lending in the fourth quarter of 2018 (October to December 2018):
Building societies approved 116,938 mortgage loans, a 31% share of the 375,262 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £18.4 billion, accounting for 26% of the £71.5 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £5.3 billion, a 44% share of total net lending across the market of £12.1 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £322.3 billion at the end of March 2018, a 23% market share.

Household savings in the fourth quarter of 2018 (October to December 2018):
Savings balances at building societies increased by £3.1 billion, a 22% share of the £14.1 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £281.7 billion, an 19% market share of the total £1,521.3 billion across the market.
