Mortgage lending in the fourth quarter of 2017 (October– December 2017):
Building societies approved 102,709 mortgage loans, a 27% share of the 374,109 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £15.6 billion, accounting for 23% of the £67.6 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £2.9 billion, a 27% share of total net lending across the market of £10.7 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £298.7 billion at the end of December 2017, a 22% market share.

Household savings in the fourth quarter of 2017 (October – December 2017):
Savings balances at building societies increased by £2.9 billion, a 21% share of the £13.7 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £268.8 billion, an 18% market share of the total £1,473.1 billion across the market.
