Mortgage lending in the first quarter of 2019 (January to March 2019):
Building societies approved 120,626 mortgage loans, a 33% share of the 362,268 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £16.7 billion, accounting for 27% of the £61.0 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £5.0 billion, a 58% share of total net lending across the market of £8.6 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £327.1 billion at the end of March 2019, a 23% market share.

Household savings in the first quarter of 2019 (January to March 2019):
Savings balances at building societies increased by £3.8 billion, a 35% share of the £10.9 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £284.7 billion, a 19% market share of the total £1,532.1 billion across the market.
