Mortgage lending 

Mortgage lending in the second quarter of 2017 (July– September 2017):

Building societies approved 114,793 mortgage loans, a 29% share of the 397,532 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £17.3 billion, accounting for 25% of the £68.1 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £3.6 billion, a 28% share of total net lending across the market of £12.8 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £297.3 billion at the end of September2017, a 22% market share.

Household savings in the second quarter of 2017 (June– September 2017):

Savings balances at building societies increased by £1.3 billion, a 13% share of the £10.4 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £266.4 billion, an 18% market share of the total £1,458.3 billion across the market.
