Mortgage lending in the fourth quarter of the year (October– December 2016):
Building societies approved 109,543 mortgage loans, a 30% share of the 360,769 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £16.4 billion, accounting for 27% of the £61.7 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £4.6 billion, an 45% share of total net lending across the market of £10.3 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £285.0 billion at the end of December 2016, a 22% market share.

Household savings in the fourth quarter of the year (October– December 2016):
Savings balances at building societies increased by £2.9 billion, a 16% share of the £18.3 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £262.2 billion, an 18% market share of the total £1,428.0 billion across the market.
