Mortgage lending 

Mortgage lending in the first quarter of 2017 (January – March 2017):

Building societies approved 112,287 mortgage loans, a 31% share of the 359,159 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £15.1 billion, accounting for 26% of the £58.3 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £3.9 billion, a 50% share of total net lending across the market of £7.9 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £289.1 billion at the end of March 2017, a 22% market share.

Household savings in the first quarter of 2017 (January – March 2017):

Savings balances at building societies increased by £1.0 billion, a 12% share of the £8.2 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £263.6 billion, an 18% market share of the total £1,435.1 billion across the market.
