About Us
The Building Societies Association (BSA) champions, represents and supports mutual lenders and deposit takers across the UK, specifically all 42 building societies and a number of larger credit unions.  It is highly respected for its representational advocacy to external bodies such as government departments and financial services regulators.  As well as proactively campaigning on behalf of the sector, the BSA works closely with the sector to represent its interests through consultation papers and provides information and advisory services to its Members and Associates. 

In addition to the BSA’s 49 Members (building societies and credit unions) it has approximately 48 Associates (organisations which have an interest in the sector).  The BSA is an unincorporated not-for-profit organisation.

The BSA currently has 25 staff in the areas of policy/representational lobbying, economics and research, external affairs, member communications, commercial activities and corporate services.

About the Role
We’re looking for a confident Policy Manager to help shape the mortgage and housing environment on behalf of our members. You’ll represent member interests with regulators, government and industry bodies, develop clear and practical guidance, and lead key workstreams across mortgage regulation, supporting borrowers in financial difficulty, and market developments.  Key policy responsibilities will include:-
  • FCA and PRA mortgage regulation, to include responding to consultations, thematic reviews, market studies and market conditions
  • Arrears and Possessions Policy including chairing and developing the workplan for the BSA panel
  • Mortgage training and development
  • Developing and leading sessions for the BSA annual mortgage conference and other events
  • Later Life Lending Policy
  • First-time Buyers Policy
  • Home buying and selling reform
What you’ll do
  • Develop and progress mortgage and housing policy positions, grounded in evidence and member insight.
  • Respond to FCA/PRA consultations, thematic reviews, market studies and changing market conditions.
  • Represent member interests in meetings with government, regulators, professional bodies and other trade associations.
  • Draft high-quality written outputs: consultation responses, briefings, correspondence, website briefs, newsletters and circulars.
  • Lead and coordinate panel/committee activity (including agendas, papers, chairing, minutes and follow-up actions).
  • Chair and develop the workplan for the arrears and possessions policy panel.
  • Support mortgage training and development, and help design and deliver sessions at the annual mortgage conference and other events.
  • Cover and build expertise across later life lending, first-time buyer policy, and home buying/selling reform.
  • Act as deputy to the Head of Mortgage & Housing Policy when required, and contribute to special projects.

About you
The ideal candidate will have/be:
Essential:
  • Experience within financial services and/or a trade association.
  • A sound working knowledge of the UK mortgage regulatory regime.

  • Strong policy analysis skills and ability to develop evidence-based positions.
  • Excellent writing skills: clear, concise and persuasive.
  • Confident communication and presentation skills, including with senior external stakeholders.
  • Ability to take ownership of discrete policy areas and deliver to deadlines.
  • Strong organisation and meeting management skills, including chairing and/or secretariat support.
  • Collaborative approach and ability to motivate and work effectively within a small team.
