Building societies across the UK have been supporting the financial needs of individuals for almost 250 years. Today over a third of the population are a member of a building society.

This report reviews the scale, form and potential impact of the financial education activities presently conducted by members of the Building Societies Association (BSA) in their communities and suggests how the BSA and individual societies might increase their impact.  It shows that through a diversified set of activities, BSA members are passionately responding to the financial education needs of the communities they work in through much good quality work. It highlights the appetite from BSA members to increase the scale, sophistication, impact and measurement of their work.

Through continuing existing initiatives and adopting some of or all of these recommendations, individually and collectively there is a real opportunity for BSA members to contribute significantly to raising financial capability standards across the UK.
