UK Savings Week: People helping people

Building societies and credit unions have taken the campaign into their branches, communities, workplaces and digital channels, translating national messages into practical action for their own members and customers.

Building societies and credit unions have been at the heart of  UK Savings Week, bringing the campaign to life with real impact. As customer-owned financial service providers, helping people improve their financial wellbeing, build resilience and achieve their goals is their purpose.

UK Savings Week was established by the BSA to help people build better savings habits, strengthen their financial resilience and improve their wellbeing. The campaign brings together organisations from across the UK around two ambitious goals: creating two million new regular savers and moving £50 billion out of non-interest-bearing current accounts by 2030.

Building a movement

What makes UK Savings Week distinctive is that its impact comes through the activities of supporting organisations – all types of financial services provider, businesses, charities and Government. Importantly, BSA members remain central   to that effort, and are key to the development and direction of the campaign.

This year we have seen building societies and credit unions take the campaign into their branches, communities, workplaces and digital channels, translating national messages into practical action for their own members and customers.

From coffee mornings in Yorkshire, branch posters and passbook inserts in Cambridge, and new savings accounts in Coventry, every activity has the potential to make a difference to somebody's financial future.

Why mutuals are natural champions of saving

At its core, saving is about creating security, confidence and opportunity. Research commissioned through UK Savings Week and the University of Bristol has shown that people who save regularly are less likely to fall behind on bills, more likely to enjoy positive wellbeing outcomes and achieve major life goals such as home ownership.

These outcomes align closely with the purpose of customer-owned financial institutions.

The BSA's sector growth strategy, Finance for a Fairer Future, places customer ownership and improving customer outcomes at the centre of the sector's future direction. UK Savings Week provides a practical demonstration of what that philosophy looks like in action: mutuals working together to help people build stronger financial futures.

Working together

The growth in reach and impact of UK Savings Week is itself evidence of what can be achieved through working together.

Supporters consistently refer to collaboration as one of the campaign's greatest strengths, praising the opportunity to bring different organisations together around a shared goal. Campaign participation has expanded significantly since its launch, with growing engagement from financial services providers, charities, businesses, government organisations and community groups. BSA members remain at the heart of that effort.

The campaign also delivers tangible outcomes. Evaluation shows high levels of consumer action among those aware of UK Savings Week, including opening savings accounts, reviewing budgets and engaging more actively with their finances. Last year's evaluation found particularly strong engagement among younger adults.

A vision larger than one week

Ultimately, UK Savings Week is not really about one week.

It is about creating a culture in which saving becomes a normal, accessible part of everyday life. It is about helping people build resilience before they face financial shocks. It is about outcomes and people, not transactions and products.

Every branch conversation, workplace presentation, community event, savings article and social media post contributes to the conversation and works towards a larger ambition: helping more people build the confidence and security that comes from having money set aside and working hard for their future.
