Our new Government

After an exciting week in Westminster, with Boris Johnson taking over as Prime Minister and a swift Cabinet reshuffle, the BSA has written to the new Prime Minister about housing, savings and communities.

In its letter the BSA called for:

  • Boris-Johnson-Union-Jack-Flag-Cartoon.jpgAn increase in the number of homes being built across all tenures and for all life stages, given 86% of people aspire to own their own home.
  • Additional support to encourage people to save as 25% of adults have no savings at all and money worries create a productivity drag on the UK economy, estimated to cost the UK around £50 billion a year.
  • Support for local communities and high streets, which remain at the heart of customer-owned businesses like building societies and credit unions.

The BSA has also written to the new Chancellor and Economic Secretary to the Treasury, raising the need for more proportionate regulation and greater support for different business models.

In our letter to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and the Housing Minister we raised a number of topics that are important to increasing housing supply and helping individuals onto the property ladder. These included shared ownership, starter homes, the Bank of Mum and Dad, housing for older people, self and custom build, modern methods of construction, green finance and Help to Buy.
